The Power of Volunteering: How hands-on Experience shapes future sports leaders
Volunteering has always been a cornerstone of personal and professional growth. For students aspiring to lead in the world of sports management, volunteering is a game-changer. At ESBS, we recognize the invaluable role that hands-on experience plays in preparing future sports leaders. At ESBS we provide our students with numerous opportunities to roll up their sleeves and make an impact at high-profile events.
From the Chicago Marathon to Valencia’s Half Marathon: Lessons from the field
At the start of this academic year, our students stepped out of the classroom and into straight into the action. They volunteered at world-class events like the Chicago Marathon, Valencia Half Marathon, and the FiA Motorsport Games. From coordinating logistics to ensuring a seamless athlete experience, these roles challenged students to apply their skills in real-world scenarios. Allowing them to navigate the fast paced world of international sporting events like never before.
“Being part of such a large-scale event was a powerful lesson in teamwork and organisation. Experiencing the event from behind the scenes brought to life the event management concepts we cover in class, making them real and tangible.” shared Amelia Seeholm, one of our Global Sports Management Master Students on this blog post about her experience in Chicago.
Why Volunteering Matters in Sports Management
In the sports industry, hands-on experience can make the difference between a resume that stands out and one that gets overlooked. Volunteering allows students to:
- Build a professional network by working alongside industry experts and peers.
- Develop critical skills like teamwork, communication, and problem-solving under pressure.
- Gain a deeper understanding of the operational aspects of sports events, from planning to execution.
For our Bachelor students, their work creating a communication impact report for the Partido Inclusivo with Atlético de Madrid was an eye opening experience. They combined their academic knowledge with on-the-ground insights to assess the event’s reach and effectiveness. This project also gave them the opportunity to learn about the importance of accessibility within sports events.
Shaping Future Leaders
At ESBS, we’re proud to see our students embracing these opportunities to grow both personally and professionally. The lessons learned on the ground translate into skills that will serve them throughout their careers.
Whether it’s managing logistics for a global marathon, analyzing event success, or contributing to inclusivity in sports, these experiences are helping shape the leaders who will drive the future of the industry.
